Why this question matters

Where someone started explains so much of who they became. The answer is often a house, a street or a smell, and those are exactly the details a family loses when nobody writes them down.

Ask it on a quiet afternoon, give time for the answer, and write down the small details. That is where the story lives.

  1. What did the house you grew up in look, sound and smell like?
  2. Did you have brothers or sisters? What were they like as children?
  3. What games did you play, and who did you play them with?
  4. When and where were you born? What were you told about the day you arrived?
  5. What did your mother cook that you still remember the taste of?
